Hôtel du Cirque and the Gavarnie Waterfall

A family-run hotel for 7 generations

We are in April, in the heart of the Cirque de Gavarnie.
In summer, it is a place that sees many amazed hikers pass by, who come here wearing sneakers and with their walking sticks, to discover a natural area of great beauty. Doubly classified (on natural and cultural criteria, an extremely rare occurrence in the world!) in 1997 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Cirque de Gavarnie is a mountainous ensemble at more than 180 degrees that can be embraced from a only glance, thanks to a footpath (without difficulty) since the village of Gavarnie. In this month of April, Olivier and Caroline Vergez are overseeing the final preparations for the annual reopening in early May of the Hôtel du Cirque and the Cascade de Gavarnie.

This hotel is a unique place that has vibrated to the rhythm of mountaineers and hikers since 1845. 7 generations of the same family have succeeded each other there, they have known the beginnings of pyreneism (a sporting and artistic movement that began in the Pyrenees, extending in Europe until the beginning of the 20th century) until the great contemporary and tourist fame of the Cirque de Gavarnie, nowadays. It was first a simple dairy project to restore walkers, then an inn, a restaurant, then a first luxury hotel in 1900. For nearly 70 years, the activity is in full swing. It is a place where stories of mountaineering, climbing and anecdotes of mythical hikes are woven. You can still hear them resonating through the photos on the walls... In the 1970s, the hotel part was closed, the catering evolved towards more simplicity. In 2012, when Olivier and Caroline took over the reins, it was with the firm intention of reviving the hotel past of the place. While perpetuating the catering activity, they undertake several years of work and reopen in 2022, the hotel and its 8 rooms! 7 rooms and 1 luxury suite, luxurious, authentic 4-star services in this place which has character and a lot of charm.

Stay at the Hôtel du Cirque de Gavarnie

For an atypical night or weekend in the Pyrenees, close to nature and at the same time housed like distinguished guests... It's a great gift to offer yourself! The Hotel du Cirque et de la Cascade de Gavarnie offers 7 rooms (including 1 accessible to PMR) and 1 suite, distributed over 2 floors. All the rooms (which bear the names of the various owners of the hotel) offer an unparalleled view of the circus and its sumptuous waterfall which flows languidly in this charming setting. The renovation of the hotel was done in a spirit of preservation of what made its success: noble materials, a cozy, intimate, calm and pleasant atmosphere. Modern and authentic at the same time, it is a place charged with emotion and almost solemn. The bed linen is silky, soft and comfortable, the furniture is of high quality and the decoration is very aesthetic. The bathrooms in the rooms are superb (the toilets are separate), they invite you to relax and rest your mind. They are equipped with magnificent old-fashioned fittings.

To get to the hotel, which it should be remembered is in the middle of a natural area accessible only on foot, after a hike of about 1h30, two solutions:

  • You are going to park your vehicle in the village of Gavarnie anyway. If you want to hike and reach the hotel on foot, you can leave your luggage in a shop in the village. They will be transferred directly to your room and will be waiting for you when you arrive.
  • If you don't want to or can't do the hike, you can join the transfer point to be taken from the village to the hotel in a hybrid vehicle.

Due to its configuration in the area in the heart of the Pyrenees National Park and its distance from the village, other shops and even a road, your stay will automatically be half board. On your arrival, you will be offered a half-bottle of champagne, then you can relax, take possession of your room and go for a walk in the dream landscape that surrounds you. During the day, take a break in the traditional sauna of the Hôtel du Cirque de Gavarnie. Made of wood and with a sumptuous view of the waterfall, it's a moment of relaxation after your walk in the fresh air. During the day, take advantage of the restaurant and bar services, open to all, and in the evening, you will have your meal at the bistronomic restaurant Le Russel dedicated only to guests. In the morning, an invigorating and gourmet breakfast will be offered to you, made up of fresh, seasonal and local products. You can take it in the restaurant or in your room, according to your preferences.
