Saint-Bertrand de Comminges, perched on top of a promontory, is a picturesque medieval town with many half-timbered houses in its historic heart.
It is a high place of art and history. You enter the upper town by the Majou gate or the Cabriole gate. The Sainte-Marie cathedral, built on a rocky outcrop, can be spotted from afar, it is a stopover on the way to Saint Jacques. Built in the 12th century, of which the imposing 33m bell tower still remains, the portal with its tympanum decorated with a decoration representing "the adoration of the Magi" and a gallery of the Cloister. The organ has a corner case, a rather rare item.
At the foot of the hill, road to Valcabrère, we discover the ancient city: Lugdunum-Convenae, founded in the 1st century BC Spreading over 30 hectares, it had 5,000 to 10,000 inhabitants and housed a temple, thermal baths, an ancient theater .
Today remain the remains. The objects found during the excavations are brought together in the archaeological exhibition space Les Olivétains II. The Saint Just basilica, in the middle of the countryside, is a pure jewel of Romanesque art.
