To the east of Ariège, between wild forests and pastures, the Cathar Pyrenees are a true paradise for hikers. It is a land of gentle mountains, hills and secret valleys, captivating and divinely beautiful. In the Plantaurel massif, a few kilometers west of Lavelanet, an exceptional site plunges us further into the heart of this abundant and luxuriant nature. Streaming from the rock and gushing from the high walls, the water has built its temple at Roquefort-les-Cascades. A true natural geological curiosity to discover!

To access the Turasse waterfalls forest from Foix, take the Herm road (D1) towards Lavelanet. After the hamlet of Carol, head towards the old village of Roquefort-les-Cascades. An old Michelin marker indicates the way! In the center of the village, from the small square with the fountain, follow the signs for "waterfall". After 500 m by car, you will arrive at the small parking lot. Follow the path and let yourself be guided by the melody of the water.

As soon as we arrive at the site, water becomes the common thread of our bucolic stroll. We follow the path that goes slightly to the right and begin to climb to arrive at a first platform, then a second. In a humid plant atmosphere, mosses, lichens and mushrooms dress the trees. The dense vegetation paints a shades of green of captivating beauty.

Before us stands the majestic 30-meter-high tufa, a mass of tufa (light, often crumbly porous rock formed from limestone deposits) also called a petrifying waterfall. This geological phenomenon is rare and astonishing. When rainwater becomes charged with carbon dioxide upon contact with the ground, it becomes acidic and thus dissolves the limestone of the mass through which it flows, forming cracks and galleries. It then emerges into the open air, giving rise to a spring. The water from this spring, charged with limestone and sulfate, is deposited upon contact with the air, creating this very special rock that resembles a green wall. Here, the limestone deposits form large masses that are constantly expanding, at a rate of 1.6 to 2 meters every 60 years.

A magical world to explore in all seasons

After a contemplative break, we continue our exploration of the area by venturing around the tufa pit to enjoy the strange and fantastical atmosphere that this forest provides. In places, the peat formations and the inextricable tangle of trees give this place an exotic and exotic feel. All that's missing are the tapirs and howler monkeys...

Continuing along the trail, limestone caves are revealed. The mineral and plant worlds intertwine to create this oasis of greenery that changes with the seasons. During our visit, in the middle of summer, the waterfall was nothing more than a thin stream of water trickling over the tufa, as the rains were not abundant enough to feed it. In autumn and spring, during the rainy and snowmelt periods, this succession of waterfalls offers a magnificent spectacle. In winter, the waterfalls can freeze and offer a wonderful frozen picture.

The path takes us to a plateau above the waterfalls. We take another path to go around the massif and descend through the undergrowth. With a positive elevation gain of 104 m , this walk, which is free and open to all, is suitable for everyone. Allow at least an hour to complete the loop. However, don't hesitate to take your time and get off the beaten track to fully immerse yourself in this extraordinary place.
