D'abord nommé « canal royal en Languedoc », les révolutionnaires le rebaptisent en « canal du Midi » en 1789. Il est considéré par ses contemporains comme le plus grand chantier du xviie siècle. Avec le canal latéral à la Garonne, il fournit une voie navigable de l'océan Atlantique à la mer Méditerranée.
