Cauteret is a spa resort which acquired its notoriety through the frequentation of Chateaubriand, Victor Hugo, Sarah Bernard, Debussy. It is also a ski resort (1850-2400 m) with 24 slopes and 15 ski lifts.
It is surrounded by peaks (Péguère, Moun-Né, Cabaliros, Vignemal, Chabarrou, etc.), lakes (Lake Gaube, Lake Estom, Lake Ilhéou), waterfalls, torrents, pine forests, clearings.
In the city, the old railway station has become a bus station. This building is the former Norwegian pavilion presented at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1889.
Another curiosity, the old cable car station that we owe to Gustave Eiffel is home to shops and cafes. The former Grand Hôtel d'Angleterre, built in 1875, now houses the 1900 Museum where the past splendours of the Belle Epoque are brought to life. ?
The Pont d'Espagne is the great classic of ideas for outings and it is a magical place, in a forest of pines, beeches and firs, framed by a succession of waterfalls. Built in 1889, it made it possible to reach the Spanish border. You can access the Pont d'Espagne by the Pont de la Rallière (offering several hiking trails), count 1h30 on foot, or by car by parking in the Puntas car park, then 15 minutes on foot, or access by shuttle from the Cauterets bus station.
Continuing the walk after the Pont d'Espagne for about ten minutes, you reach the Meillon monument which offers a view of the mythical summit of Vignemale (3298 m). It is also the starting point for a hike towards Lac de Gaube, with its grandiose landscape and deep blue water.
