    • The Labouiche underground river, an unmissable discovery south of Toulouse

It is in Baulou, 6 km from Foix, that the magnificent underground river of Labouiche extends, 1 hour south of Toulouse. Discovered in 1908, it has been open to the public since the 20th century to the delight of young and old alike, amazed by these galleries formed in the center of the Earth. Fear not, you will be accompanied by a passionate guide in a floating boat on the river.

The Labouiche underground river, an unusual visit to the depths of the Earth

In Ariège, in the heart of the Pyrenees, don't miss an extraordinary expedition that takes you on a journey through time. In these underground galleries, objects from Prehistory and the Gallo-Roman era were discovered, anecdotes recounted with pleasure by your guide for the day. No, it is not a free visit since the Labouiche underground river has a typicality, its means of transport. It is by boat that you can explore the magnificent carved limestone rocks, highlighted by soft, warm lights in a cave atmosphere. Using the strength of their arms, your traveling companion moves the boat welcoming groups of up to 12 people, commenting throughout the visit on the concretions, stalagmites and stalactites formed over time. Some even have magical names like the “unicorn” or the “witch”, keep your eyes peeled so you don’t miss them!

The Labouiche underground river, what you need to know to enjoy this cave in the Pyrenees

If it's your first time six feet underground, we advise you to take a vest , because it doesn't get more than 13°C at a depth of 60 meters. Likewise, remember to wear good sneakers to be able to descend the 200 steps without falling during the guided tour. Rest assured, the efforts will mainly be made by your guide, while you will be comfortably seated in your boat. Allow 1 hour 15 minutes to take the time to ask your questions and, above all, to admire the incredible geological wealth present in the underground galleries. Did you know that the Labouiche river is the longest navigable river in Europe? We understand better why the course is 1,500 meters long. Garden with trees, large parking lot, shaded picnic area and marked trail, it's easy to spend the day there. Take a look at the shop before leaving, they have nice souvenirs.

A very unique experience! We wanted to visit a cave, but have 2 kids on the younger side 3 and 1 year and a half. This was a great option cause my 3 year old didn’t need to walk much, and he enjoyed riding the boat. It was very organized. The wait was about 10 minutes. Our guide was very nice and funny. Some of the guides speak English and Spanish. I highly recommend this place!

Really great experience. We went with a 3 & 1 year old who were in awe of the sights. Lots of steps obviously but fine with baby in a carrier. Really good value as well and the cafe is reasonably priced considering they could easily charge more for tourists. Would highly recommend to families.

Going on a boat underground is impressive, but the whole tour was in French. Even though we let the guide know that we don't speak any French and she answered fluent in English, she adressed only the French people in our group and completely ignored us. Participating in a tour for an hour and not understand a word, was very disappointing. As a tourist attraction, I would have expected more inclusion of international tourists.

Amazing trip on the underground river. The limestone features are well worth the climb down the stairs. Bit cool down there so take a waterproof jacket and sensible shoes. The guides that pull the...

We enjoyed this tour on a super hot day, so this activity gave us a break from the heat. Just plan to be dressed for the 53 F / 13 C temps. You need to be able to walk on wet surfaces (2 boat...
