The Notre-Dame-de-la-Sède Cathedral of Tarbes is a major religious building located in the city of Tarbes, in the Hautes-Pyrénées department, in the Occitanie region.
History and architecture
The cathedral was built from the 12th century, replacing an older church. It thus presents a mixture of architectural styles, including Romanesque and Gothic.
It is known for its Romanesque nave, its wide and deep transept, as well as for its octagonal lantern tower.Remarkable elements
Inside, there is a Baroque high altar with a marble canopy and a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
The cathedral contains the will of Louis XVI engraved on a black marble plaque.
The building houses the tombs of several bishops of Tarbes, including Monsignor Pierre-Marie Théas, a prominent figure of the Second World War.
