It may not look it, but this hotel has quite a history, beginning with Jean du Barry's exile in Paris after being disgraced on the death of Louis 15. On his return to Toulouse, he bought a number of buildings and plots of land and began construction of the hotel in 1777, with the aim of building it as luxurious as Versailles. On his death in 1794, the building was sold as national property, and occupied successively by the Benedictines, students at the Lycée Jeunes Filles and patients at the hospital that had been set up there.
