No less than four caves bear witness to this human presence: the Bédeilhac cave, inhabited for more than 15,000 years and which contains numerous paintings and engravings; the cave of the cow, one of the most important prehistoric sites; the cave of Niaux, decorated Magdalenian cave, exceptional underground museum, for André Leroi-Gourhan, archaeologist and specialist in prehistory, the only " who fights with Lascaux and Altamira for the quality of his works, by the scope of the compositions and by the breath that animates them... " ; and the Lombrives cave, dug 200 million years ago by the Ariège, one of the largest with 39 km of galleries on 7 levels and which can be visited on several routes.
