The Marian city attracts nearly 6 million visitors each year, pilgrims from all over the world but also tourists wishing to discover an entire region and stopping off in Lourdes.
Lourdes is located on the edge of the Gave de Pau. To discover the city, we will head towards the area of sanctuaries: the cave of Massabielle, place of the apparitions of the Virgin 18 times to Bernadette Soubirous, from which springs a “miraculous” source; the crypt, the original sanctuary; the Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire basilica, built between 1883 and 1889 for the fiftieth anniversary of the apparitions, it is connected to the basilica of the Immaculate Conception, known as the upper basilica, in the neo-Gothic style; the Espéluges Stations of the Cross; the underground basilica of Saint Pius X, consecrated in 1958 for the centenary of the apparitions, one of the largest buildings in the world, shaped like the hull of a concrete ship. Several museums are also worth visiting: the Sainte Bernadette museum, to learn all about the life of the saint; Bernadette's birthplace or Boly mill where the family lived before being evicted there because they could no longer pay their rent; the paternal house or Lacadé mill, shop-museum; the Cachot, a 13 m2 cabin lent by the municipality and where the family lived at the time of the apparitions; the fortified castle, erected on a rocky peak, it was the residence of the counts of Bigorre and since 1921 it has housed the Pyrenean museum, a museum of popular arts and traditions; the wax museum, bringing together several biblical characters made by artists from the Grévin Museum; the museum of Lourdes, presenting the reconstitution of a street at the time of Bernadette Soubirous.
