Located at the foot of the Pic du Midi and the Cols d'Aspin and Tourmalet, the Hautes-Pyrénées sub-prefecture owes its prosperity to flourishing hydrotherapy in the 19th century. Its old center has some interesting remains, such as the Jacobins tower from the 15th century, 34 m high, the centerpiece of a convent destroyed during the Revolution, beautiful art deco buildings, facades with balconies (bigourdanes) superbly decorated with flowers ( the city has 3 flowers in the ranking of towns and villages in bloom), half-timbered houses, mullioned windows and beautiful Renaissance portals.
The Saint Vincent church, with its 40 m high bell tower, dates from the 14th century. The paths of Coustous traced at the end of the 17th century on the site of the ramparts constitute, in the shade of the lime trees, a friendly and lively place. Between the thermal baths and the Casino, the Salies Museum (Fine Arts Museum), with its art deco façade, houses a collection of canvases by painters from the great Parisian salons of the first half of the 19th century and watercolors by Blanche Odin, a famous watercolourist, as well as folk art objects.
Another museum is the one dedicated to marble which made the town prosperous in the 20th century. It is located in the former Salut baths, in the heart of a landscaped park, which also houses the botanical conservatory. More than 300 marbles of various origins are listed there, the epic of the marble of the Pyrenees, from the Roman period until the 19th century is presented there.
