  • English
    • Nestled in the heart of the Couserans region of Ariège, Saint-Lizier is a city with a rich history, once the seat of the bishop. Its exceptional architectural heritage makes it a must-see "City of Art and History."

      A bit of history

The jewel of Saint-Lizier lies in its two ancient cathedrals. Saint-Lizier Cathedral, now a parish church, houses a remarkable collection of 11th-century Romanesque frescoes, among the oldest and best-preserved in the Pyrenees. Its 12th-century Romanesque cloister, unique in Ariège, invites contemplation. Not far away, Notre-Dame-de-la-Sède Cathedral, adorned with Renaissance paintings, has earned it the nickname of the "Sistine Chapel of Ariège".

Dominating the town, the imposing 17th-century Bishops' Palace houses the Ariège Departmental Museum, offering a journey through local history. The remains of the 5th-century Gallo-Roman ramparts bear witness to the antiquity of the site, known as Lugdunum Consoranorum. A visit to the 18th-century pharmacy, admirably preserved in the former Hôtel-Dieu, is a true leap into the past.

Strolling through the cobbled streets of Saint-Lizier is a pleasure in itself, with its half-timbered houses dating from the 15th to the 18th centuries. The town is also a stop on the Way of St. James (Pyrenean Piedmont Way), welcoming pilgrims.

Perched on a rocky spur overlooking the Salat River, Saint-Lizier offers panoramic views of the valley and the surrounding Pyrenees. Its proximity to Saint-Girons, the capital of the Couserans region, makes it an ideal base for exploring the region. Throughout the year, cultural events enliven the town, such as the original "Witches' Days."
