LE MAS D'AZIL Towns and Villages in Le Mas-d'Azil

The village of Mas d´Azil is an old country house, a Mecca of Protestantism. In 1625, 14,000 soldiers from Richelieu laid siege to the city, which resisted for five weeks, then the siege was lifted.
The village is home to a cave, one of the most important prehistoric sites, crossed over 420 m by a departmental road. This gigantic natural gallery was occupied 32,000 years ago and then served as a refuge for the Cathars and Protestants. It gave its name to the Azilian civilization.
Today, its lighting and fittings allow visitors to visit one of the major sites, classified as a historic monument.
Objects from the cave excavations, pieces of Paleolithic art, are on display in the Prehistory Museum, located in the village. Another curiosity, the ten dolmens scattered around the Mas d´Azil, three of which are easily accessible for the visit.
