The Church of the Assumption of Maubourguet, also known as the Church of Saint-Martin, is an iconic historical monument located in the heart of the town of Maubourguet, in the Hautes-Pyrénées.
History and Architecture
Built in the 11th century, it was originally a priory of the Benedictine monastery of Saint-Martin de Celle.
Its architecture presents Romanesque elements, evidence of its ancient origins.
It has undergone several transformations over the centuries, notably after the Wars of Religion and during the French Revolution.
The octagonal lantern tower is a distinctive feature and the Romanesque apses are particularly well preserved.Cultural and historical significance
It is located on the Via Tolosane, one of the routes to Santiago de Compostela, which gives it spiritual and historical importance.
