Situated on the banks of the Garonne River, the Basilica is reputed to house the Black Madonna, protector of the city and of pregnant women. Certainly the oldest Marian sanctuary, it was built on the remains of an ancient temple in the 5th century, and destroyed at the end of the 12th century. After two years of renovation, it now boasts fine neoclassical architecture and paintings by Joseph Roques depicting the cycle of the Virgin Mary's life. Every year on May 3, the church hosts the mass of the Académie des Jeux Floraux.
